Logo Design Contest for The Down to Earth Doctor

Posted by admin September - 13 - 2011 - Tuesday Comments Off

Help! I need a clever logo.

I’ve been a full-time holistic lifestyle advocate for nearly 3 years. I’m known world-wide as The Down to Earth Doctor; and I’ve got nothing to show for it – in the form of a logo that is. LOL!

Increasingly, as I’m requested to be a speaker at public events like health fairs, doctor’s conferences, work-place wellness programs, and conventions, participate in radio and television interviews, and asked to be an author for articles and books, I’m asked to provide my logo. It’s about time I get one.

So, I’m asking for your assistance in designing one. And I’m happy to reward you for your efforts. All those who submit an entry will receive a free digital copy of my book Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. The designer who’s logo is chosen to be used, the winner, will receive $75.00 and an autographed copy.

Healing book

To keep this legal, I must state that I reserve the right to reject any or all entrants, all submissions become my property, each person may submit a maximum of 3 original designs, and it’s open to all ages. The deadline for submissions is 12/1/2011.

Now here is some help. I’m branded and known as The Down to Earth Doctor for 2 reasons:

#1) I live very holistically. For example, I raise much of my own food by gardening and farming organically. I have chickens, pigs, and turkeys. My family (wife and 3 kids) get lots of outdoor physical activity by bicycling, hiking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, etc. We use natural methods of real health care like chiropractic, eating wholesome food, prayer and spiritual growth, and lifetime learning (the real definition of health is optimal mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing).

#2) I’m told I have a talent for teaching in a very conversational. easy-going, and practical manner. Although this also means I sometimes talk like a country bumpkin and say things like “yah-hey”. LOL!

Also, it may help you to understand what a full-time holistic lifestyle advocate is. My mission is to empower people to make wiser lifestyle decisions, particularly regarding their health. I help people minimize their health care expenses and decrease their dependence on traditional medical care. I say we need more self-care much more than we need more health care.

I also love to say that the only thing man ever really cured is a ham. LOL! By this I mean that our bodies are for the most part self healing and self regulating. We’ve each been gifted with our own internal doctor by God.  The key to optimal wellbeing is to give that inner doctor what it needs to do its job. Yah-hey!

You can learn even more details about me by reading my previous posts on this website.

So there you are. You may submit your design electronically via email to tpotisk@aol.com, or send it in to Dr Tom Potisk, PO Box 11, Caledonia, WI 53108.

Best of luck and may God bless you and your family with whole health,

Dr Tom Potisk

4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally

Posted by admin April - 3 - 2011 - Sunday Comments Off

Women’s health and wellness can be complicated.

I recently was the featured speaker at a wonderful Women’s group  in Greendale, WI called A Woman’s Journey. My topic was 4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally.

It was a lovely meeting of bright and intelligent women. Since it was all women, I was able to share a secret about getting control of men. This produced a lot of laughs! I made them all promise to never repeat the secret because I could get in a lot of trouble if men found out. LOL! If you would like to know you’ll have to hire me as a speaker.

I then proceeded to the 4 tips using my custom made  PowerPoint presentation. Here they are:

#1: Do it for God. Yep God. Surprising isn’t it? I base my advice on Biblical scripture such as 1st Corinthians 6:19,20 – Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. And Romans 12:1 -Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

My point is that it’s both an honor and a higher calling for all of us to take optimum care of our bodies. And that God has gifted each and every one of us with incredible self healing abilities. Dr Albert Schweitzer, the famous missionary doctor and Nobel prize winner had this to say about it “Each patient carries his own doctor within him. We are at our best when we give the doctor that resides within each patient the chance to go to work.” Don’t disregard this valuable gift!

#2 Eat more wholesome foods. This does not mean you’ll have to eat bird seed! A few simple changes go along way. Examples include choosing whole grains over white/processed wheat, increasing one’s intake of fruits and vegetables, seeking fresher more organically grown produce, and even striving to eat more slowly. I advise eating a big salad every day, perhaps even making a meal out of it by adding some quality protein to it like walnuts, oily fish, beans, or lean meat. I offer my signature recipe for The Healing Salad as a free download on the right side of this web site.

#3 Get more physical. I advise striving for at least one-half hour of fun physical activity every day. And mix it up with a variety of activities so you use different muscle groups. The primary reason people stop exercising is boredom so that’s another reason to have several choices. There are some exercises that are dangerous, so I offer a free report on the right side of this website called The 5 Most Dangerous Exercises. Learn these and avoid them. My new book called Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness bible for All Ages contains even more details about exercise including pictures illustrating The Healing Stretch. You can order my book securely by clicking HERE.

#4 Structural alignment.  I call this “the missing link” in health care. It’s overlooked by most patients and doctors. I’m referring to the vital importance of the alignment of one’s bones and joints, particularly the joints of the spine.  This is crucial because mis-alignment of the spine causes irritation and pinching of the nervous system, the master communication system of the body. Optimum health is dependent upon a free flowing nervous system. Chiropractors are the experts in this field. Every one needs a Doctor of Chiropractic on their health care team. To assist you, I offer a free report on the right side of this website called How to Check Yourself and Your Family for Spinal Structural Mis-alignments.  It’s easy to check when you learn how.

So the ladies loved it, especially when I shared stories about my experiences as a holistic family doctor for over 25 years. I’ve helped people from a few days old up to 103. These days I’m a full time advocate of the benefits of holistic living.

I enjoy teaching people easy to implement, practical changes in lifestyle and behavior so they can be less dependent on the over-priced, higher risk conventional medical system. Let me know if you need a good speaker. Maybe I’ll reveal that secret about men to your group!

I have just a few speaking opportunities available this year. You can contact me at 262-835-1767 or by email at tpotisk@aol.com

Aging: I’m 50 today, now what?

Posted by admin January - 21 - 2011 - Friday Comments Off

Aging can be difficult if you let it. Thank God I’m still young enough to make decisions.

Dr Tom Potisk age 7

Prior to today I was taking advantage of saying I was 40 something, and conveniently shaving off the last digit. That worked for 9 years. ;)

But life marches on. Isn’t it interesting how some of us fight to keep control of so many things, and actually succeed with most, but the one thing that keeps going without our control is time? God ultimately wins with that.

Dr Tom Potisk age 14

But in a way, we do have some control on time and aging – accept it and perhaps even find some humor in it. Here are a few things I’m laughing about today:

You know you’re getting older when…

Everything that works hurts, and what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work.

You feel like the morning after, and you haven’t been anywhere.

Your little black book only contains names ending in M.D.

Your children are beginning to look middle-aged.

Your mind makes contracts your body can’t keep.

You look forward to a dull evening.

Your knees buckle and your belt won’t.

Your back goes out more than you do.

You sink your teeth into a steak, and they stay there.

You know all the answers, but nobody asks the questions.

So, today as I’m turning fifty, you won’t get any advice from me about health or wellness. My book Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages can tell you those things. Today, I’m too busy trying to laugh. Here are a few pictures of me in my younger days. Don’t laugh too hard! :)

By the way, I don’t feel a day over 49.

Livestock: Friends and Food

Posted by admin December - 22 - 2010 - Wednesday Comments Off

Livestock: Friends and Food? Is it possible?

Yes but it’s not easy.

When my wife and I first moved to our farm about 16 years ago, we were advised that if we obtained any livestock that we intend to eat, then we should not allow them to become pets.

“Uu -huh” I said in my characteristic covertly defiant agreement. I think that means I lied.

Since then we’ve enjoyed having numerous animals around here that we’ve enjoyed both as near pets and as food.  No, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that we’ve hugged and petted these animals as we do with our cats and dog, but they have been cherished as a part of the family. Sounds a bit gruesome I know, but I’d feel guilty if we didn’t show them at least some appreciation as we raised them.

Our farm is blessed with a really nice chicken coop, so the first animals we obtained were chickens. They were given to me as a gift from a former neighbor. They are Aracauna breed, and I’m told they originated in South America. Known for laying eggs of multiple colors (teal, brown, tan and white) they are also cherished as dual-purpose chickens good for both egg production and roasting.I love the fresh eggs we collect and eat most mornings – I can really taste and see the difference! They are a wonderful benefit to health.

We were given one rooster who we were told is called Garth. We love the way Garth cockadoodles  frequently.

I hope the neighbors do too! LOL.

Then another neighbor started telling us about how his kids raise piglets every spring. Before I knew it, there were squeals coming from our lower barn, both from my kids and the cute pink piglets!

We are amazed how fast they mature, growing from 40 pound cutey-pies to 200 pound hogs in a matter of weeks. And the pork meat is delicious; much tastier and leaner than what I’ve had from the grocery store.

I built them a very strong pen with heavy metal fencing so they could have plenty of fresh air and sunshine. “They’ll never get out of there.” I said. Ha! One day we arrived home to find the big boy and girl standing in the driveway. I still can’t figure out how they escaped because there was nothing amiss about their fence or gate. So what did I do? Well one of the tricks of raising livestock is to always shake the food dish before feeding. So I opened up their gate, stepped in, shook the food dish to make it’s distinctive sound, and in they ran! Hey mothers, try that and see if it works on your kids. LOL!

Then one day I saw a young turkey for sale at a local farmer’s market. “I’ll take it” I gleefully said, picturing my family drooling at Thanksgiving as they eyed the roasted fresh home-grown bird. We named him Gobble and enjoyed watching him grow. Well, as Thanksgiving approached the kids stated asking “Dad, we won’t eat Gobble will we?” Luckily turkeys freeze well. LOL!

Then, somewhere along the line I decided to tackle one of my greatest fears – bees! Ever since I was 6 years old I’ve panicked whenever I hear something buzzing. This terror began on the day I saw and heard my sister screaming after she stepped on a honey bee with a bear foot. Even the sound of a fly put me in a panic. So a friend gave me some bee raising equipment and before I knew it, and after much anxiety, I was raising bees. Their kind of difficult to hug, but make for a very interesting hobby! Amazingly, one can obtain 20 pounds of honey from even one good hive. I’ve really enjoyed giving my fresh, organic honey away as gifts, not to mention using it as a sweetener.Have you ever tried honey in coffee? Fantastic!

So, we’ve enjoyed these animals both as near pets and food. I’m delighted to be eating this freshly harvested, organically grown food. Animals are truly a gift from God. As the author of the book Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages, this kind of healthy, holistic lifestyle is right up my alley.

What’s next? I’m considering cattle, maybe goats, or even emu. I’ll keep you posted.

Exercise: No Pain, Yes Gain

Posted by admin September - 8 - 2010 - Wednesday Comments Off

Exercise. The word has a negative feel to it, don’t you think? I bet the first words that come to mind are pain, work, and no thanks! LOL.

It doesn’t have to! And it won’t once you learn the truth.

Dr Tom Potisk on the Nicolet Wheel-away Bike Marathon

The truth is that most if not all of the exercise gadgets you see advertised, and all the costly routines that are offered, may do some good but are not really necessary and certainly not permanent. Those good looking people in the ads are actors, who nearly starve themselves! LOL.

I’d advise you to not even start any of those unless you start on your own with what I’m about to tell you.

There are really only three reasons why most people are discouraged from starting and then continuing with exercise.

First, many people assume that if there is no pain there is no gain. That is not true! There is plenty of benefit from simply taking a walk, a bike ride, or a light aerobic class. I’ve always been amazed at the improvements in people’s health when they start even the simplest of exercise. They key is to keep it consistent. Get a routine going, even if it’s walking, and you’ll see a drop in blood pressure, more balanced blood sugar, feel more energy, and even become more alert in a short time. And yes, don’t worry, your excess weight will come off later!

Secondly, it’s easy to get bored with the same routines. The key to keeping it up for a lifetime is to have several options to chose from, mix it up regularly, and then make it fun! That’s why I recommend seeking your physical activity outdoors whenever possible because there are more options, and it’s generally more fun. Have you considered snow shoeing, cross country skiing, canoeing, rollerblading, rock climbing, etc? Are you fearful of those choices? I can assure you that you need to be more fearful of the problems that result from inactivity like higher incidences of stroke, heart disease and cancer. You’ve been fearful for the wrong reasons! LOL.

Dr Tom Potisk waterskiing

There are risks with any kind of physical activity/exercise. I wrote a report called The 5 Most Dangerous Exercises You Need to Avoid, and you can get it for free as a download on the right side of this web site. You’ll also find that and many other wonderful tips for optimum health in my book Whole Health Healing – The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. You can order it securely by clicking HERE.

Lastly, what is your real motivation for exercise? I bring this up because most people have the wrong motivation, and that’s why many fail. If you exercise because you want to look better, lose weight, be more attractive to the opposite sex, etc. – these are selfish reasons and they’re not necessarily bad. But there is a much better reason, it’s a concept that I’ve observed never fails, and is the secret to obtaining life-long results – do it for God. Yep, don’t exercise for yourself, do it because you’ve been gifted with a physical body to house your spirit! This is a biblical concept that can be read in 1st Corinthians 6;19,20. It essentially says that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Get your mind around that concept and then optimum care of your body gets a whole lot easier and more of a priority.

And exploring more of the Bible may likely lead to your salvation!I hope so.

So, it’s easy than you’ve thought isn’t it? Sorry for taking away your excuses – but remember I do it because I love you. LOL. When can you start?

My Inner Voice Speaks Health

Posted by admin March - 3 - 2010 - Wednesday Comments Off

Here’s my story – I think this will help you.

A few years ago I stared waking up at 2-3 AM. I had long been a good steady and sound sleeper, usually in bed by 9 PM and up by 6AM. This early awakening was quite consistent after it started. At first I thought I had some health problem because I was trained to recognize that as a potential sign. But everything checked out Ok.

There’s a lot of junk on TV at 2-3 AM!

So after a few weeks of this, I started paying closer attention. A pastor told me not to fight it, that the next time it happened just sit quietly, and say a prayer asking essentially “I’m here and willing, what’s up God?”  I was shocked to find that there were amazing words in my head, words about health, healing and wellness. At first, when I became aware of this, I thought I must be going nuts because I had heard that crazy people claim to hear voices. But the words were not really voices. They were just words and they were there. Kind of like when you have a musical tune in your head, but your ears are not hearing it – your brain is.

Maybe you’re starting to think I’m nuts! LOL.

I told my dilemma to a few people I knew I could trust. One of them  gasped and said, “Oh my, you are supposed to be a writer!”

She went on to tell me that most successful writers get their material that way – they wake up with it.

“Can’t be” I responded, “because I failed at writing in school, had lousy grades in grammar, had never written anything significant, already had a successful career as a doctor, and best excuse of all – I don’t even know how to type!”

I’m an expert at denial, so off I went during my usual doctoring thing, still waking up with incredible health information on or in my mind that could help millions. Until………

On a beautiful February afternoon my daughter and dog and I decided to take a snowmobile ride (Yes, my dog like to ride on a snowmobile). We drove out to our frozen pond where we’ve driven our snowmobile many times. As we slowed down and made a turn, I felt the back of the snowmobile drop. I gunned the engine to get out of there, but it was too late. Within 2-3 seconds the three of us were up to our necks, floating in icy, and 12 foot deep water.

Our pond in summer

I immediately grabbed my daughters coat with one hand, and with my other hand hung onto the ice shelf. I boosted her out with all my might. She crawled away screaming as I screamed also, telling her to “Go tell mom to call 911!”.

Next, I boosted my dog Lou out who was whimpering. Then I attempted to get out of the death trap by getting my elbows up on the ice shelf, digging my finger nails in with all my might. As I managed to just get my chest on the ice, it broke again and down I went, this time up to my eyeballs! So I tried again on another side of the ice shelf, and by the grace of God and with the boost of angels I slowly wiggled my way up and out. As I crawled across that ice with bleeding finger nails, I knew my world was going to change.

It was the most terrifying experience I’ve ever had. I had an unpleasant tightness in my chest for weeks after that, and I still feel that tension whenever I describe the ordeal, even now as I write this and wipe the tears from my eyes. But it has changed my life forever.

The very next morning, still shaking, I sat down at the typewriter and started to peck out, with my two fingered typing style, the words in and on my mind. They poured out like water over Niagara Falls, within a short time I’d written several manuscripts. The first one is now officially published and already a hit – Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. You can order it securely from this web site.

I feel strongly that the near drowning experience was a wake-up call, it was God giving me a second chance for me to put my knowledge, experience, and inspired words to use to empower people to make wiser healthcare decisions. To my complete surprise, I am now a full time advocate of holistic health. I sold my practice. Every week I do several radio interviews, speaking engagements, and article submissions. I love every moment of it, even when it gets frustrating. My first book is fast growing in demand, and I’m polishing up several more to follow.

There you have it. I feel good about what I’m doing. I’ve learned to pay attention to directions from what I believe is my Holy Spirit guiding me.

Are you paying attention to the things that happen to you, considering that they may be directions from a higher power? If you’re not, you’ll lead a very stressful existence. I hope it does not take a terrifying dunk in icy water for you to take action!
