4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally

Posted by admin April - 3 - 2011 - Sunday Comments Off

Women’s health and wellness can be complicated.

I recently was the featured speaker at a wonderful Women’s group  in Greendale, WI called A Woman’s Journey. My topic was 4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally.

It was a lovely meeting of bright and intelligent women. Since it was all women, I was able to share a secret about getting control of men. This produced a lot of laughs! I made them all promise to never repeat the secret because I could get in a lot of trouble if men found out. LOL! If you would like to know you’ll have to hire me as a speaker.

I then proceeded to the 4 tips using my custom made  PowerPoint presentation. Here they are:

#1: Do it for God. Yep God. Surprising isn’t it? I base my advice on Biblical scripture such as 1st Corinthians 6:19,20 – Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. And Romans 12:1 -Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

My point is that it’s both an honor and a higher calling for all of us to take optimum care of our bodies. And that God has gifted each and every one of us with incredible self healing abilities. Dr Albert Schweitzer, the famous missionary doctor and Nobel prize winner had this to say about it “Each patient carries his own doctor within him. We are at our best when we give the doctor that resides within each patient the chance to go to work.” Don’t disregard this valuable gift!

#2 Eat more wholesome foods. This does not mean you’ll have to eat bird seed! A few simple changes go along way. Examples include choosing whole grains over white/processed wheat, increasing one’s intake of fruits and vegetables, seeking fresher more organically grown produce, and even striving to eat more slowly. I advise eating a big salad every day, perhaps even making a meal out of it by adding some quality protein to it like walnuts, oily fish, beans, or lean meat. I offer my signature recipe for The Healing Salad as a free download on the right side of this web site.

#3 Get more physical. I advise striving for at least one-half hour of fun physical activity every day. And mix it up with a variety of activities so you use different muscle groups. The primary reason people stop exercising is boredom so that’s another reason to have several choices. There are some exercises that are dangerous, so I offer a free report on the right side of this website called The 5 Most Dangerous Exercises. Learn these and avoid them. My new book called Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness bible for All Ages contains even more details about exercise including pictures illustrating The Healing Stretch. You can order my book securely by clicking HERE.

#4 Structural alignment.  I call this “the missing link” in health care. It’s overlooked by most patients and doctors. I’m referring to the vital importance of the alignment of one’s bones and joints, particularly the joints of the spine.  This is crucial because mis-alignment of the spine causes irritation and pinching of the nervous system, the master communication system of the body. Optimum health is dependent upon a free flowing nervous system. Chiropractors are the experts in this field. Every one needs a Doctor of Chiropractic on their health care team. To assist you, I offer a free report on the right side of this website called How to Check Yourself and Your Family for Spinal Structural Mis-alignments.  It’s easy to check when you learn how.

So the ladies loved it, especially when I shared stories about my experiences as a holistic family doctor for over 25 years. I’ve helped people from a few days old up to 103. These days I’m a full time advocate of the benefits of holistic living.

I enjoy teaching people easy to implement, practical changes in lifestyle and behavior so they can be less dependent on the over-priced, higher risk conventional medical system. Let me know if you need a good speaker. Maybe I’ll reveal that secret about men to your group!

I have just a few speaking opportunities available this year. You can contact me at 262-835-1767 or by email at tpotisk@aol.com

Hugh Hefner Envy: 4 Tips for a Youthful Exuberance.

Posted by admin December - 29 - 2010 - Wednesday Comments Off

Hugh Hefner is the envy of anybody aging. Hugh is 80 something.

I like that “something part.” I learned that from an elderly patient of mine. When I asked her age she said “I am 80 something.” with a big grin, ”It’s not necessary to count the second digit.” LOL!

By the way, I am 40 something. I feel better saying my age that way especially since I’m only able to say that for a few more weeks.

I’m told I look good for my age. I’m lean, fit, and active. All my parts are still working well; just like Hugh. I’ll casually neglect to comment about my hair. LOL!

So how do some people maintain their youthful exuberance? God is ultimately in control of what happens to each of us, but he also gifted us with the ability to make choices.

Having been a holistic family doctor for over 25 years, working face to face with thousands of senior citizens, I have a few observations and suggestions about youthfulness.

1)Check Your Posture. It is an often overlooked component of beauty, health and youthfulness. Look closely at those who catch your eye and you’ll notice those people have good posture.   From a side view you’ll notice that their head lies directly above their torso, and that an imaginary straight line can be drawn from their ear to their shoulder, to their hip, and then to their ankle. From a front or back view you’ll notice levelness of their ears, shoulders, and hips. It all has a lot to do with spinal balance.

Be sure and get the free report I offer on the right side of this web site called: How to Check Yourself and Your Family for Spinal Structural misalignment. Learn how to sit, lay and stand properly.

Good posture is important for health because of the structure/function relationship. I’m referring to the alignment of your bones and joints. I bet you haven’t heard about how structural balance has an effect on your health. This structure/function relationship is what I call “The missing link” in health care. This is true particularly of spinal alignment.

Stress and trauma cause the vertebrae to misalign and this in turn irritates or impinges the delicate spinal nerves and spinal chord (this is called subluxation). The nervous system controls and coordinates all body systems including immunity. Chiropractors specialize in locating and correcting subluxations. Find a chiropractor and get checked regularly. How often? Once per week optimally and once per month minimally. Yes, this is the best way to improve your posture and your health.

2) Think Young. Our minds are a lot like computers. Garbage in equals garbage out. If you keep exposing yourself to frequent negative media for example, you’ll think, talk, and act negative. In case you have not noticed, most of the information in the media is negative. So I suggest limiting your exposure. Listen to the news or read the newspaper once a day maximum. And be very selective with other things that influence your mind like television shows, magazines, books, the internet, and even some people.  Seek out uplifting, educational, inspiring, and positive input.

3) Eat Young Food. Reminds me of the adage “You are what you eat.” So eat fresher produce and preferably organically or home grown. The vitamin and mineral content is superior not to mention the taste. Aim to eat a big salad every day. Another free report I offer is the recipe for The Healing Salad. Fantastic! Fresh vegetables contain high levels of anti-oxidants, compounds known to nullify a common destroyer of youth – free radicals.

4) Love more. Yes expressing love is a key component of youthfulness. This is much more than just sex. It’s about love for your spouse, children, neighbors, and even your enemies. Actions speak louder than words here. Sharing your God given talents to help your fellow man, besides being a higher calling for all of us, works wonders to strengthen your immunity, cardio-vascular system, and mental capacities.

So, if you envy Hugh Hefner and want to maintain a youthful exuberance, the above lifestyle choices can help you do that.

Oh yeah, one more thing: behave yourself!

Drinks: healthy and fun

Posted by admin June - 7 - 2010 - Monday Comments Off

Drinks can be healthy and fun.

Do you know about my Healing Martini recipe? LOL.

The Healing Martini - isn't she gorgeous?

I’m not kidding! To compliment my new book Whole Health Healing – The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible For All Ages, I invented several “Healing” recipes like The Healing Salad, The Healing Soup, The Healing Muffin, The Healing Cookie, etc. and now I’m delighted to present – The Healing Martini.

I can almost hear the applause coming from around the world. LOL. Your welcome!

Listen, what less would you expect from me, the “down to earth” doctor? Being a practical and creative guy, I experimented with several common foods and drinks, modifying them with healthier ingredients.

Why are these recipes healing? Healing demands specific nutrients for cellular rebuilding, balanced body chemistry and optimum organ function. These recipes contain ingredients that foster/enhance healing. Are you feeling better already? LOL.

Now before any of you anti-alcohol readers write me any hate mail let me explain. I’m not advocating alcohol consumption. If one has a problem with alcohol they should avoid this. But my position is that, like all things, alcohol is a gift from God. And like all things, abuse is the problem, not the thing itself. So enjoy all things in moderation. This recipe by the way is quite weak in the alcohol content.

So here it is – the recipe for The Healing Martini: (drum roll please!) LOL.

The Healing Martini

One shot unsweetened cranberry juice (I used Northland brand).

One shot cherry ale (I used a New Glarus Brewery brand called Wisconsin Belgian Red).

One shot unsweetened coconut water ( I used Naked brand, don’t get any ideas! LOL).

A small dash of stevia (stevia is a natural sweetener).

A lemon garnish twist.

What makes this drink healing? The cranberry juice is a natural anti-bacterial. The coconut water contains essential oils helpful to the cardiovascular and nervous system functions. Cherries are known to be anti-inflammatory. The ale is a low alcohol alternative to the standard high alcohol typical martini. The stevia is a natural sweetener and produces no glycemic response ( does not raise insulin levels).

You can watch me mix this drink in my own kitchen on a 2 minute youtube video here:

Do you have any healthy, healing type recipes you can share. If so, please post them here. Eventually I’ll be adding these to my book.

Cheers!

Natural Health Methods -If Dick Cheney Only Knew About Them

Posted by admin March - 3 - 2010 - Wednesday 1 COMMENT

Natural health methods are not very complicated. For most of us anyway! LOL.

I’m enjoying the morning by sitting next to my dog, sipping a good cup of coffee and reading the paper.

One particular article sparks an old familiar feeling. It’s a frustrating feeling, one I’ve learned to take action on because that’s the only way I get relief. And no it’s not caused by the coffee! LOL.

The article that’s causing a stir inside me is about former vice president Dick Cheney. It says he just had his seventh heart attack. Thank goodness he survived again, I’m happy for that. What frustrates me to take action is that I’d be willing to bet that he doesn’t know about the holistic health measures that could likely help him.

I don’t know Dick Cheney other than what I’ve read about him in the news over the last few years. But I’d be willing to bet that he only seeks traditional medical care for his heart condition let alone the rest of his health. Now don’t misunderstand me, traditional medical care is the best care for acute heart attacks. It can and does save lives. But heart malfunction does not drop out of the sky. Nor do I believe it’s caused by the hand of God, even if you are a Republican (relax it’s just a joke, I don’t claim any political affiliation). There is always an underlying reason behind every health problem, and that needs to be investigated and dealt with because otherwise the same problem keeps coming back, just like his does.

Now, medically trained personnel will say that they do search for underlying causes of health problems through blood tests, urine tests, blood pressure screenings and more. I truly believe most of the docs mean well. And I would bet that Dick Cheney probably has the usual sources of his heart condition as determined by medical testing like high blood pressure/and or cholesterol issues. But still, those are symptoms not sources. In other words, there may very likely be an underlying source of the cholesterol imbalance and high blood pressure.

That’s what frustrates me. That’s what I feel is my God given mission – to empower people like Dick Cheney and you – to make wiser health care decisions.

I don’t believe people are being told all the information nor are they being given all the choices concerning health care.

What sources or causes can there be in the case of a malfunctioning heart? Many, such as poor food choices, lack of exercise, a stress filled mind and even spinal structural imbalance. These are the basics of wellness that easily and commonly get left out in health care. Sure the emergency and crisis care of traditional medicine has its place. God bless them and I hope they help me some day if I need it. But there is a whole lot more to it.

Now, I’ll likely write about all those sources in the near future here in this column. I’ve already got it all covered in my book: Whole Health Healing – The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. But let me tell you now about the source of health problems called spinal structural imbalance. This is the most common, safest to treat, most easily correctable source I know of. It is the specialty of Doctor’s of Chiropractic just like me.

Keeping it simple, your nervous system controls all your body functions, including your heart. Nerve impulses travel from your brain to your heart and back again. These nerves can get pinched or at least irritated by spinal misalignment. The technical name for that is called vertebral subluxation. When those nerves to the heart are pinched or irritated, the signals get disrupted and the heart won’t function optimally. It’s a structure function relationship. I’ve observed first hand in my own practice that this can be a source of heart problems and many other conditions. The skilled hands of a chiropractor can detect these subluxations and verify them with diagnostics like x-ray or heat scans. The chiropractor can then adjust the misaligned spinal segments to improve the nerve flow. The result can be a better functioning heart.

This principle is unique to chiropractic since it’s inception in 1895, and can be applied, no, should be applied to every health problem. Better yet, go to a chiropractor regularly and get checked and adjusted for prevention. Why regularly? Because the spinal structural imbalance are caused by stress, trauma, and toxins. Who does not have one or more of those in their lives on any day?

So there is my rant. I feel better already.

If you know or see Dick Cheney, tell him this stuff so he can feel better to.

And what about your health?
