Listen, I’ve got a profound God given message for all of you. And, as I watch things playing out in the news media of the world, I’m more convinced than ever that you and  you’re family are in grave danger if you don’t take heed.

My message is that our conventional health care system is killing us. Just look around at the perfect storm developing: an aging population, an obesity epidemic, skyrocketing insurance costs, an already overly-strained national budget, a looming doctor shortage, rampant fraud in research, a diabetes epidemic, more and more processed and preserved food, and I could continue.

Alan Greenspan said “The biggest threat to our economy is healthcare.” Yikes!

It’s not my goal to scare anybody. But yes, this particular truth that I carry in my message is justifiably scary.

I’m happy to report that I’m equally sure  this health care problem is completely fixable.  However, it’s completely up to you to take action. Your employer, your medical physician, your insurance, and certainly not the government is going to do this for you.

I’m also happy to report that the solution is not all that difficult – just a few simple lifestyle changes on your part will make a profound difference.

Employee and Workplace wellness programs are beneficial and necessary for a successful business. I co-authored a workplace wellness book called Wellness Wins.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Southeastern Wisconsin, my home area for my entire life, has a unique demographic of ethnic diversity and unfortunately a higher than average rate of obesity and its related problems. Because of the locations uniqueness, a health and wellness speaker needs to be familiar with the region, the culture, its population’s health problems and viable solutions.

There are 6  specific considerations that should be addressed by the speaker/presenter:

1)      The Milwaukee region has a harsh climate making outdoor physical activity difficult at times. The need for regular exercise is an important component of wellness, so the presenter needs to have viable alternatives for dealing with the region’s weather.

2)      The people of the Milwaukee area are accustomed to foods high in saturated fats such as fish fries, French fries, custard, and sausage. Alcohol is consumed in higher than average quantities, usually in the form of beer. Speakers need to be aware of these customs and work at modifying them not eliminating them.

3)      The education level of the region is higher than average so even though the region has the 2 above noted complications, the people are generally understanding of the health problems they face and willing to learn alternatives.

4)      The region’s population has a long history of adapting to change politically and economically. Lifestyle changes will be more easily considered if this proud  history is mentioned and complimented.

5)      Competitive sports are highly valued and in Milwaukee such as baseball, bowling, golf, and basketball. Participation  should be encouraged and highlighted as a viable source of physical activity.

6)      The population has a well engrained conservative demeanor. Radical or unconventional lifestyle changes need to be introduced cautiously and judiciously.

In our current era, health and wellness education needs to focus on budget-friendly self care methods because of the difficulty in accessing the conventional medical system. This difficulty is mainly economic resulting from high deductibles and co-payments  of health insurance.

Self care methods include regular exercise, better nutritional choices, stress management, spiritual growth and structural balance (posture and stretching). These instructions need to be kept entertaining, lighthearted and interesting, emphasizing the benefits to an individual’s wellbeing. Heavy use of statistics and research is discouraged because most audiences find it boring.

One item of research that is interesting to corporate and industry leaders is that  which shows  each dollar spent on wellness for employees returns $3.85 due to the decreased absenteeism and increased production by employees.

Thus, health and wellness education programs for the public in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Southeastern Wisconsin is unique and economically worthwhile when performed by locally based speakers/presenters like myself – Dr Tom Potisk.

I have developed several health and wellness programs for all size and type industries. The programs are based on my new book called Wellness Wins!: A simple guide to a happier, healthier life. The book was co-written with Dr Jerry Zelm, also a local resident, primarily as an aid for corporate wellness programs.

Vacations: 6 Secrets to Make Yours Extraordinary

Sorry about my lag in blog posts. I was on another extraordinary vacation.

You might wonder why a health and wellness specialist and author like me is writing about vacations? You’ll be pleased to find out that I recognize and prescribe vacations as a vital component of wellness. (And the crowds went wild LOL!)

I’m not kidding. During my 25 years as a busy holistic family doctor near Milwaukee, Wisconsin I observed the necessity for more people to have more rest, especially in the form of vacations. Many illnesses are caused at least in part by stress, or an over-burdened lifestyle.

Now before you begin planning to lead a sedentary lifestyle on the couch for the rest of your life, know that it is equally important to do meaningful fulfilling work that you are passionate about, and dedicate yourself to it. But still, regularly disconnecting with vacations needs to be sprinkled in for rejuvenation of body, mind, and spirit.

So here are several of my suggestions that can make your vacation extraordinary.

#1) I’ve noticed that if people take vacations regularly, then the lazy, non-stimulating type of vacations get boring fast. So go places and do things that are educational, exciting, and adventurous.  For example, I once rented a motor home in Rome, Italy and criss-crossed the country.

#2) You don’t want to come home being 5 pounds heavier, so partake in some physical activity each day. Whenever I go somewhere I’m always on the lookout for places to canoe, hike, and bike.

#3) Another necessity to keep your physique in check is to control your eating. By all means sample the local cuisine,  but keep some self control such as being sure to eat a big salad everyday just as I consistently recommend. If you travel overseas you’ll notice how particularly healthier the food choices tend to be, especially breakfast. For example, when I was in Poland I was served radishes for breakfast. In France, I ordered an omelet and it came with a salad. Try it and I bet you’ll like it.

#4) Go with the mindset that no matter what happens it will be a great trip. Make the best of whatever the situation. Bad weather, travel delays, and getting lost are to be expected. You can’t lose with an attitude like that. My wife and I were robbed by a taxi driver in Istanbul and we still laugh about it.

#5) Learn some of the local history. Every location has fascinating stories associated with it and they will provide considerable depth to your visit. Do a bit of research before you go, buy a guidebook, or ask the locals. My wife and I delight in taking guided walking tours of the major cities we visit. Most of them have been free.

#6) Take at least some risk. Some of my most memorable experiences came from dropping my guard a little. For instance, I was once driving across Montana and saw an interesting looking side road. I decided to take it even though I had no idea where it went. Within a few miles I stumbled upon the fascinating  site of Custer’s last stand. That was really cool.

There are endless places to go that will provide a lifetime of stimulating adventures.

Healthy Family Vacations

Healthy family vacations can be possible.

And the kids won’t complain any more so than they do on a standard family vacation. LOL.

Yes, yes they will still ask “Are we there yet?”, and “Can I watch TV there?”, and “When are we going home?” Get used to it; they’re kids!

But the goal of a healthy, holistic vacation is maintaining some control over nutrition, learning or experiencing something new, and having some fun physical activity every day. And don’t forget, some ice cream is okay! LOL.

The standard family vacations tend to be toxic, boring, inactive, lazy, and unhealthy overeating disasters. Those can bring out the monster in a kid.

Sure, I understand that Mom and Dad need and deserve a break from the grind of their regular routine. God help them! But a bit of pre-planning, and laying down of specific demands can make the whole experience much healthier. Likely, everybody will come back in as good if not better shape than before the break.

Don't forget that kids love fishing!

For example, I’d recommend a trip to the library shortly before the vacation, and demand that each kid pick out a few worthwhile books for the car or plane, and for the dreaded days of poor weather. And make rules that limit electronic gaming time, perhaps only in the car, or no more than one-hour daily and only after physical activity; better yet, leave the electronics at home!

Avoid or minimize media exposure. You’ll find you didn’t miss much except more bad news! LOL.

Bring along a healthy snack bag containing some fresh fruit like bananas, apples, nuts, trail mix, etc.

Lay down the law before the trip, explaining that although you all may likely partake in some lax eating habits, something green needs to be consumed with lunch and dinner. No, it can’t be just green M&Ms or green pop! LOL.

Try hard to maintain the simple eating rule I advocate – having a big salad every day, perhaps making it one of your meals by adding some quality protein. As for activities, go ahead and sleep later, nap in a lounge chair, lay on the beach, float in the pool, and thoroughly let go of any mental and physical tension you’ve all been harboring; but then get up and explore. Make a little adventure everyday by looking for unique characteristics in your area – a hike, a bike ride, a canoe ride, visit something historical or artistic, anything that stimulates your right brain function. This right brain stimulation is known to be vitally important for thorough relaxation.

I’m known as The “Down-to-Earth” Doctor because of my personal holistic lifestyle and practical, easy-going teaching abilities, and I just love adventures like exploring trails and rally cool, unique areas. I recently took my family on a bike trail near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (45 minutes southwest of Milwaukee). The trail is called The White River State Trail. The beautiful trail, on an old railroad line, runs eleven miles between Spring Valley Road (near Burlington) and Elkhorn along the Racine and Walworth county lines. It passes through the darling, historic villages of Springfield and Lyons. Be sure and stop at the original train depot, now The Pedal and Cup Coffee Shop in Springfield; good food, drink, and people there!

Ask your hosts, hotel desk clerk, or local visitor center about highlights to see in your area. Do an internet search for local bike trails, canoe trails, historical relics, and geographical wonders. On behalf of your kid’s sanity, limit the museums to one per trip! LOL.

So the goal is to not only come back rested, but to come back resisted, mentally stimulated, energized, stronger, educated, enthused, at peace, and in awe of God’s creation.

Your last words should be “That was the best trip since….” and “I haven’t felt better in…”

Healthy People Live Overseas

Healthy people are more likely to be found outside the USA. Sick thought eh? No pun intended. LOL.

Here I am enjoying the sunshine in Tuscany, Italy

But it’s true. Check the list produced by the World Health Organization and you’ll find that the USA ranks poorly in overall health compared to many other countries, even though we have more doctors, the best technology and the highest costs by far. We are ranked as number 39 – you can read more about it and see the list here. The area I live in/near, Milwaukee, Wisconsin is ranked one of the unhealthiest in the USA!

Now before any of you readers write to me and suggest I move away, I want to explain that I still like it here, that the good ole USA is still the best place to live, and that I’m just trying to help us all get and stay healthier. I believe that can happen if we learn at least a little by observing and learning from other, healthier cultures. Can I stay, please? LOL.

For example, I just returned from a wonderful trip to Italy, visiting Rome and then Tuscany. My wife and I  enjoy what we call “adventure vacations” meaning we travel on our own, getting off the beaten path when possible, do something very active like hiking or biking, and try to come back home having learned something from the experience and the real culture. If this all fails we can always count on coming back poorer! LOL.

This gives me a good excuse to eat every thing in sight – strictly business right? LOL. You can order the book by clicking here.

Italian people are generally healthier than us in the USA; especially Italian people who live in Tuscany. Tuscany is about 1-2 hours northwest of Rome and is quite rural. It’s also extremely beautiful. In fact my wife and I agree that it is one of the loveliest places we’ve ever visited.

Sorry, for those of you that think it’s all genetic – that’s long ago been dis-proven. It’s really about lifestyle choices.

So what did I observe there about the lifestyles of these healthier people? Plenty! For one thing they generally eat fresher vegetables and fruits there. They mostly do their grocery shopping in small markets that have much locally grown produce. Many of these rural people are prolific gardeners growing much of their own produce.

They use a tremendous amount of extra-virgin olive oil. When I ate at restaurants, the waiter always started out by bringing fresh bread (the bread had little or no salt in the dough) but there was no butter to be seen. Instead they put olive oil on their bread. Of course, olive oil is known to have better quality fats than butter. When I ordered salad, there was no dressing to be found other than olive oil and vinegar. There are olive trees growing practically everywhere you look.

They drink red wine with every evening meal. I saw much less consumption of soft drinks than here.

Fried foods are a rarity, and grilled foods are common – even vegetables, also served with olive oil instead of butter.

Most portions are smaller. Boohoo! LOL.

They eat much slower. Much slower. In fact it’s darn right irritating for us Americans to visit their restaurants because a typical meal takes about 3-4 times as long to be served. We are impatient eaters and overeat as a result.

Lastly but equally important, it’s easy to see that they are far more active than most of us are.  They walk a lot.  In fact, the Italians have a wonderful custom called passegiatta in which they take a stroll every evening.

Very active indeed. I’m not kidding that I picked up an 85 year old hitchhiker! Her name was Tosca and she looked great for her age.

So there you are- lessons from my Italian adventure vacation.

Healthy food fight at the movies

Yesterday I took my 2 boys, Mike, 10, and Andy, 14, to the local movie theatre, here in the Milwaukee area to see the new movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My kids have been reading the book series of the same name for the past 2 years or so.

Going to the movie theatre has always been a dread for me because of the food selections there. On past movie outings, I just bit the bullet and allowed my kids to have the popcorn with unhealthy oils and candy loaded with artificial flavorings and colors. Of course, I applied the art of negotiation and compromise I advocate in my book Whole Health Healing – The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages. If you’re not familiar with it, the compromise I advocate is insisting upon some extra healthy food item the day of the splurge to help negate or nullify the not-so-healthy item. For example, I’d make the kids have an extra vegetable portion with their next meal. Awful am I not?

In the art of any negotiation, the other party is usually expected to make a counter offer. Thank goodness, kids don’t figure that part out .

And I’d always insist on just one poison – yeah, poison. I’d give them the option of either  one soft drink, or one candy item, or popcorn. They usually choose the candy or popcorn. I’m glad because I do believe the soft drink is the worst of the choices. Every theatre I’ve been in has either a water fountain, bottled water or both. So don’t fall for the “but I’ll be thirsty” whine! But why can’t theaters offer healthy food items?

But on this outing, I decided to step up and shake the world a bit. I decided I’m going to take a small bag of healthy snacks from home, into the theatre, and let the kids eat that stuff during the movie.

Before you call the movie food police on me, you should know that I did ask first at the ticket window.

I had 2 bananas, and a container of raisins in a white plastic grocery bag and walked into the theatre with my kids. I felt nervous, and thought “this must be how Martin Luther King felt when he marched across the bridge in Selma, Mississippi! I’m starting a revolution! The difference was that I had my two kids for protection.

As I walked up to the ticket window, I noticed the young female attendant started to tighten up and squint her eyes, kind of like the security guards at the airport do if you look at all suspicious.

I said “My kids need to eat healthy so I’m bringing in some healthy snacks.” At first, there was an uncomfortable pause as we stared each other down, just like the gunfighters in the old westerns. Then she said “Let me ask the manager”.

Within moments a man appeared with pistols drawn (just kidding J). He asked what he can do for me. Again I said “My kids need to eat healthy so I’m bringing in some healthy snacks”. And again, the uncomfortable pause, as he looked downward and frowned as if somebody just took away his puppy. Before he could answer, I said cheerfully “ It’s just some bananas and raisins!”. Again, the pause and the frown, this time accompanied by a slow drawn out sigh.  Finally, in one of the most unenthusiastic, reluctant tones he said “Okay”.

The revolution has begun!

My Inner Voice Speaks Health

Here’s my story – I think this will help you.

A few years ago I stared waking up at 2-3 AM. I had long been a good steady and sound sleeper, usually in bed by 9 PM and up by 6AM. This early awakening was quite consistent after it started. At first I thought I had some health problem because I was trained to recognize that as a potential sign. But everything checked out Ok.

There’s a lot of junk on TV at 2-3 AM!

So after a few weeks of this, I started paying closer attention. A pastor told me not to fight it, that the next time it happened just sit quietly, and say a prayer asking essentially “I’m here and willing, what’s up God?”  I was shocked to find that there were amazing words in my head, words about health, healing and wellness. At first, when I became aware of this, I thought I must be going nuts because I had heard that crazy people claim to hear voices. But the words were not really voices. They were just words and they were there. Kind of like when you have a musical tune in your head, but your ears are not hearing it – your brain is.

Maybe you’re starting to think I’m nuts! LOL.

I told my dilemma to a few people I knew I could trust. One of them  gasped and said, “Oh my, you are supposed to be a writer!”

She went on to tell me that most successful writers get their material that way – they wake up with it.

“Can’t be” I responded, “because I failed at writing in school, had lousy grades in grammar, had never written anything significant, already had a successful career as a doctor, and best excuse of all – I don’t even know how to type!”

I’m an expert at denial, so off I went during my usual doctoring thing, still waking up with incredible health information on or in my mind that could help millions. Until………

On a beautiful February afternoon my daughter and dog and I decided to take a snowmobile ride (Yes, my dog like to ride on a snowmobile). We drove out to our frozen pond where we’ve driven our snowmobile many times. As we slowed down and made a turn, I felt the back of the snowmobile drop. I gunned the engine to get out of there, but it was too late. Within 2-3 seconds the three of us were up to our necks, floating in icy, and 12 foot deep water.

I immediately grabbed my daughters coat with one hand, and with my other hand hung onto the ice shelf. I boosted her out with all my might. She crawled away screaming as I screamed also, telling her to “Go tell mom to call 911!”.

Next, I boosted my dog Lou out who was whimpering. Then I attempted to get out of the death trap by getting my elbows up on the ice shelf, digging my finger nails in with all my might. As I managed to just get my chest on the ice, it broke again and down I went, this time up to my eyeballs! So I tried again on another side of the ice shelf, and by the grace of God and with the boost of angels I slowly wiggled my way up and out. As I crawled across that ice with bleeding finger nails, I knew my world was going to change.

It was the most terrifying experience I’ve ever had. I had an unpleasant tightness in my chest for weeks after that, and I still feel that tension whenever I describe the ordeal, even now as I write this and wipe the tears from my eyes. But it has changed my life forever.

The very next morning, still shaking, I sat down at the typewriter and started to peck out, with my two fingered typing style, the words in and on my mind. They poured out like water over Niagara Falls, within a short time I’d written several manuscripts. I feel strongly that the near drowning experience was a wake-up call, it was God giving me a second chance for me to put my knowledge, experience, and inspired words to use to empower people to make wiser healthcare decisions. To my complete surprise, I am now a full time advocate of holistic health. I sold my practice. Every week I do several radio interviews, speaking engagements, and article submissions. I love every moment of it, even when it gets frustrating. My first book is fast growing in demand, and I’m polishing up several more to follow.

There you have it. I feel good about what I’m doing. I’ve learned to pay attention to directions from what I believe is my Holy Spirit guiding me.

Are you paying attention to the things that happen to you, considering that they may be directions from a higher power? If you’re not, you’ll lead a very stressful existence. I hope it does not take a terrifying dunk in icy water for you to take action!

The “Down-to-Earth” doctor?

The “down-to-earth” doctor? What the ….?

I didn’t pick the name – “down-to-earth-doctor”. Honestly, it’s what I heard frequently from people who get to know me. At first I didn’t like it. Most of us doctors have over inflated egos you know, so we like big, complicated, and sophisticated titles associated with our names. I’ve got doctor friends with titles like “orthopedic spine specialist” and “ortho-molecular pediatrician”. So why did I have to end up with “down-to-earth-doctor”? Because that’s the real me.

Who am I? Well, this morning as I write this I’m sitting next to my wood burning stove with my dog sleeping at my feet. I just drank a big glass of tomato juice that I made last fall from my garden tomatoes (don’t worry I’m not a vegetarian nor do I encourage it.). And when I’m done writing this I’m going for a walk. Know me yet?

The wood stove is making my right side warm, but my left side is cold (I live in an old but lovely drafty farm house). Know me better?

I just sent my three kids off to school, and my wife off to an exercise class (life is great), but only after frying up some eggs for them from my own chickens (life is even greater). Understanding me?

Soon I’ll be picking up the phone and participating in a radio interview. They’ll be asking me about my book, Whole health Healing and my holistic lifestyle (when you’re different everybody wants to know how and why). Just like you do.

As I write this, I’m feeling guilty because I’m typing with my laptop on my lap (isn’t that why they are called laptops?), and that’s not ergonomic. I’ll need a chiropractic adjustment soon if I keep this up! Both the improper position and the guilt cause spinal subluxations (misalignments). Guilt also you wonder? Yep, and I’ll write more about that in the future. But, are you getting a feel for me?

And I’m typing this with two fingers just like I’ve done with all 7 of my books because, well, …….it’s a long story! Got me now?

Don’t worry, I’ve got or had all the years of college (too many), degrees, awards, reputation, huge practice, thousands of patients, mountains of student loans, and a long resume of accomplishments. But you know what, none of that allows me to help people as much as being “down-to-earth”. A lady complimented me yesterday when she said, “your down-to- earth” nature allows you to relate to people better than any doctor I’ve ever met.”

I struggled with finding “my brand”. I listened to a lot of marketing experts as I was trying to figure out what to do with my book, and they all said you gotta have a brand. After considering all kinds of brands and envying those of others, I finally got my answer – it’s what people are saying about you, nothing more nothing less. That wisdom came from my friend Susan Northey, a branding and marketing genius in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thank God for friends like that!

I’m good with that title, the “down-to-earth doctor”. That’s me.
