Employee and Workplace wellness programs are beneficial and necessary for a successful business. I co-authored a workplace wellness book called Wellness Wins.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Southeastern Wisconsin, my home area for my entire life, has a unique demographic of ethnic diversity and unfortunately a higher than average rate of obesity and its related problems. Because of the locations uniqueness, a health and wellness speaker needs to be familiar with the region, the culture, its population’s health problems and viable solutions.

There are 6  specific considerations that should be addressed by the speaker/presenter:

1)      The Milwaukee region has a harsh climate making outdoor physical activity difficult at times. The need for regular exercise is an important component of wellness, so the presenter needs to have viable alternatives for dealing with the region’s weather.

2)      The people of the Milwaukee area are accustomed to foods high in saturated fats such as fish fries, French fries, custard, and sausage. Alcohol is consumed in higher than average quantities, usually in the form of beer. Speakers need to be aware of these customs and work at modifying them not eliminating them.

3)      The education level of the region is higher than average so even though the region has the 2 above noted complications, the people are generally understanding of the health problems they face and willing to learn alternatives.

4)      The region’s population has a long history of adapting to change politically and economically. Lifestyle changes will be more easily considered if this proud  history is mentioned and complimented.

5)      Competitive sports are highly valued and in Milwaukee such as baseball, bowling, golf, and basketball. Participation  should be encouraged and highlighted as a viable source of physical activity.

6)      The population has a well engrained conservative demeanor. Radical or unconventional lifestyle changes need to be introduced cautiously and judiciously.

In our current era, health and wellness education needs to focus on budget-friendly self care methods because of the difficulty in accessing the conventional medical system. This difficulty is mainly economic resulting from high deductibles and co-payments  of health insurance.

Self care methods include regular exercise, better nutritional choices, stress management, spiritual growth and structural balance (posture and stretching). These instructions need to be kept entertaining, lighthearted and interesting, emphasizing the benefits to an individual’s wellbeing. Heavy use of statistics and research is discouraged because most audiences find it boring.

One item of research that is interesting to corporate and industry leaders is that  which shows  each dollar spent on wellness for employees returns $3.85 due to the decreased absenteeism and increased production by employees.

Thus, health and wellness education programs for the public in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Southeastern Wisconsin is unique and economically worthwhile when performed by locally based speakers/presenters like myself – Dr Tom Potisk.

I have developed several health and wellness programs for all size and type industries. The programs are based on my new book called Wellness Wins!: A simple guide to a happier, healthier life. The book was co-written with Dr Jerry Zelm, also a local resident, primarily as an aid for corporate wellness programs.

Due to requests, a completely web based program is in development. This will be able to be accessed by individual employees and their families. The advantages of this type program include no interruption in worker’s production time, magnified benefits due to the family involvement, and less cost.

The wellness book itself is available strictly from me. I also offer a complimentary consultation to evaluate your workplace wellness needs.

4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally

Posted by admin April - 3 - 2011 - Sunday Comments Off

Women’s health and wellness can be complicated.

I recently was the featured speaker at a wonderful Women’s group  in Greendale, WI called A Woman’s Journey. My topic was 4 Steps to Optimum Health, Naturally.

It was a lovely meeting of bright and intelligent women. Since it was all women, I was able to share a secret about getting control of men. This produced a lot of laughs! I made them all promise to never repeat the secret because I could get in a lot of trouble if men found out. LOL! If you would like to know you’ll have to hire me as a speaker.

I then proceeded to the 4 tips using my custom made  PowerPoint presentation. Here they are:

#1: Do it for God. Yep God. Surprising isn’t it? I base my advice on Biblical scripture such as 1st Corinthians 6:19,20 – Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. And Romans 12:1 -Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

My point is that it’s both an honor and a higher calling for all of us to take optimum care of our bodies. And that God has gifted each and every one of us with incredible self healing abilities. Dr Albert Schweitzer, the famous missionary doctor and Nobel prize winner had this to say about it “Each patient carries his own doctor within him. We are at our best when we give the doctor that resides within each patient the chance to go to work.” Don’t disregard this valuable gift!

#2 Eat more wholesome foods. This does not mean you’ll have to eat bird seed! A few simple changes go along way. Examples include choosing whole grains over white/processed wheat, increasing one’s intake of fruits and vegetables, seeking fresher more organically grown produce, and even striving to eat more slowly. I advise eating a big salad every day, perhaps even making a meal out of it by adding some quality protein to it like walnuts, oily fish, beans, or lean meat. I offer my signature recipe for The Healing Salad as a free download on the right side of this web site.

#3 Get more physical. I advise striving for at least one-half hour of fun physical activity every day. And mix it up with a variety of activities so you use different muscle groups. The primary reason people stop exercising is boredom so that’s another reason to have several choices. There are some exercises that are dangerous, so I offer a free report on the right side of this website called The 5 Most Dangerous Exercises. Learn these and avoid them. My new book called Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness bible for All Ages contains even more details about exercise including pictures illustrating The Healing Stretch. You can order my book securely by clicking HERE.

#4 Structural alignment.  I call this “the missing link” in health care. It’s overlooked by most patients and doctors. I’m referring to the vital importance of the alignment of one’s bones and joints, particularly the joints of the spine.  This is crucial because mis-alignment of the spine causes irritation and pinching of the nervous system, the master communication system of the body. Optimum health is dependent upon a free flowing nervous system. Chiropractors are the experts in this field. Every one needs a Doctor of Chiropractic on their health care team. To assist you, I offer a free report on the right side of this website called How to Check Yourself and Your Family for Spinal Structural Mis-alignments.  It’s easy to check when you learn how.

So the ladies loved it, especially when I shared stories about my experiences as a holistic family doctor for over 25 years. I’ve helped people from a few days old up to 103. These days I’m a full time advocate of the benefits of holistic living.

I enjoy teaching people easy to implement, practical changes in lifestyle and behavior so they can be less dependent on the over-priced, higher risk conventional medical system. Let me know if you need a good speaker. Maybe I’ll reveal that secret about men to your group!

I have just a few speaking opportunities available this year. You can contact me at 262-835-1767 or by email at tpotisk@aol.com

Aging: I’m 50 today, now what?

Posted by admin January - 21 - 2011 - Friday Comments Off

Aging can be difficult if you let it. Thank God I’m still young enough to make decisions.

Dr Tom Potisk age 7

Prior to today I was taking advantage of saying I was 40 something, and conveniently shaving off the last digit. That worked for 9 years. ;)

But life marches on. Isn’t it interesting how some of us fight to keep control of so many things, and actually succeed with most, but the one thing that keeps going without our control is time? God ultimately wins with that.

Dr Tom Potisk age 14

But in a way, we do have some control on time and aging – accept it and perhaps even find some humor in it. Here are a few things I’m laughing about today:

You know you’re getting older when…

Everything that works hurts, and what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work.

You feel like the morning after, and you haven’t been anywhere.

Your little black book only contains names ending in M.D.

Your children are beginning to look middle-aged.

Your mind makes contracts your body can’t keep.

You look forward to a dull evening.

Your knees buckle and your belt won’t.

Your back goes out more than you do.

You sink your teeth into a steak, and they stay there.

You know all the answers, but nobody asks the questions.

So, today as I’m turning fifty, you won’t get any advice from me about health or wellness. My book Whole Health Healing: The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible for All Ages can tell you those things. Today, I’m too busy trying to laugh. Here are a few pictures of me in my younger days. Don’t laugh too hard! :)

By the way, I don’t feel a day over 49.

Best Fitness Equipment for Weight Loss

Posted by admin July - 22 - 2010 - Thursday Comments Off

Best fitness equipment for weight loss? It’s you and all your bones, joints, muscles, and any part of you involved with movement. Especially your brain. Yep, your brain. LOL.

kids

Emily and Mike, strong healthy kids

I say your brain is likely the most important of all because even before you begin any exercise or fitness routine, you must change your brain first. By that I mean your first challenge is to get your thinking correct. There are a few important things you must understand first.

If you are having a deja-vu type experience right now – yes you have heard me or read my material before about this ‘change your brain first’  routine. I say and write the same thing when it comes to altering your eating habits for weight loss, you must change your………….. Okay, okay, I’ll stop, but only if you agree. LOL

I’m adamant about this because the vast majority of people that begin an exercise or fitness program quit within a few weeks or even days. They’ve wasted their time, and maybe money if they paid for some program or equipment, because they didn’t change their………….    Sorry, I almost wrote it again! LOL.

So don’t even start anything until you understand and accept these basic concepts: (My new book Whole Health Healing – The Budget Friendly Natural Wellness Bible For All Ages contains a chapter called Exercises That Really Work and Those to Avoid. You can buy the book by clicking here.

1) Exercise and fitness routines need to be life-long. That’s right, forever and ever, as long as you live. You are struggling with your weight now, because you likely have not been active enough in the past. Yesterday I went rollerblading with my son. The day before that I went bike riding with my daughter. The day before that I swam. And today I’m going to rollerblade again. And the day after that I’m going for another bike ride. Get my point? Seek to partake in at least 30 minutes physical activity everyday and settle for no less than 3 times per week. Make it mandatory – a priority. If you ever stop, you will quickly loose the benefits you’ve worked so hard for.Yes it’s that important. Get angry about it if you have to! But sorry no, the anger does not count towards the………… LOL.

2) Exercise needs to be fun.  The most common reason most people stop the routine they start is boredom. If it’s not fun, it won’t get done! Take a look at rummage sales, flea markets, and garage sales and you’ll see loads of exercise equipment, much of it barely used. You may likely have some stuff you got suckered into that is collecting dust in your attic or basement. Now if you’ve got a routine going with some equipment and you’re enjoying it and keeping it up – congratulations! But that usually is not the case for most others. The rest of us are mere mortals. LOL.

Exercise needs to be fun!

3) Exercise needs to be varied. Yep, it’s that boredom factor again. I advocate having several fun physical activities you can choose from. I even change mine with the seasons because I prefer outdoor activities. In the winter I downhill ski, cross country ski, ice skate, etc. Another benefit of varying your activity is that it works different parts of your body. For example, I’m amazed how rollerblading tightens up my laterals (sides) compared to how swimming and running tightens up my front and back.

4) It does not have to be grueling or painful. Not at all! Even light activities like walking have noticeable benefits. There are no doubt more benefits if you push yourself a bit more, but you don’t have to go overboard. And if you do increase you pace or level of exertion, do it gradually. I believe that if you are uncomfortable in any significant way after exercising – you’ve gone at it too hard.

5) Do it for God not self. Honor God with your body. This is a biblical concept from 1st Corinthians. If you exercise or eat properly because you want to look better, feel better, and impress others, that’s not all bad although selfish. But the entire idea of caring for one’s body works and lasts significantly better when you accept that your body is a gift from God. That’s a more honorable reason to be caring for it optimally. I wrote an article about this you can read by clicking here.

Yes, there are some exercises that are more dangerous than others. You can read my free report called The Five Most Dangerous Exercises You Need to Avoid by getting it from the opt-in box on the right side of this website.

Got it now? If you do you are ready to proceed and succeed. Can I say it one last time please? Your brain has changed first!

The “Down-to-Earth” doctor?

Posted by admin March - 3 - 2010 - Wednesday Comments Off

The “down-to-earth” doctor? What the ….?

I didn’t pick the name – “down-to-earth-doctor”. Honestly, it’s what I heard frequently from people who get to know me. At first I didn’t like it. Most of us doctors have over inflated egos you know, so we like big, complicated, and sophisticated titles associated with our names. I’ve got doctor friends with titles like “orthopedic spine specialist” and “ortho-molecular pediatrician”. So why did I have to end up with “down-to-earth-doctor”? Because that’s the real me.

Who am I? Well, this morning as I write this I’m sitting next to my wood burning stove with my dog sleeping at my feet. I just drank a big glass of tomato juice that I made last fall from my garden tomatoes (don’t worry I’m not a vegetarian nor do I encourage it.). And when I’m done writing this I’m going for a walk. Know me yet?

The wood stove is making my right side warm, but my left side is cold (I live in an old but lovely drafty farm house). Know me better?

I just sent my three kids off to school, and my wife off to an exercise class (life is great), but only after frying up some eggs for them from my own chickens (life is even greater). Understanding me?

Soon I’ll be picking up the phone and participating in a radio interview. They’ll be asking me about my book, Whole health Healing and my holistic lifestyle (when you’re different everybody wants to know how and why). Just like you do.

As I write this, I’m feeling guilty because I’m typing with my laptop on my lap (isn’t that why they are called laptops?), and that’s not ergonomic. I’ll need a chiropractic adjustment soon if I keep this up! Both the improper position and the guilt cause spinal subluxations (misalignments). Guilt also you wonder? Yep, and I’ll write more about that in the future. But, are you getting a feel for me?

And I’m typing this with two fingers just like I’ve done with all 7 of my books because, well, …….it’s a long story! Got me now?

Don’t worry, I’ve got or had all the years of college (too many), degrees, awards, reputation, huge practice, thousands of patients, mountains of student loans, and a long resume of accomplishments. But you know what, none of that allows me to help people as much as being “down-to-earth”. A lady complimented me yesterday when she said, “your down-to- earth” nature allows you to relate to people better than any doctor I’ve ever met.”

I struggled with finding “my brand”. I listened to a lot of marketing experts as I was trying to figure out what to do with my book, and they all said you gotta have a brand. After considering all kinds of brands and envying those of others, I finally got my answer – it’s what people are saying about you, nothing more nothing less. That wisdom came from my friend Susan Northey, a branding and marketing genius in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thank God for friends like that!

I’m good with that title, the “down-to-earth doctor”. That’s me.

What is your brand?
